Work Space Advance of Salary

You can apply for a work space advance of salary to cover the cost of making improvements to your home office to ensure a productive and safe working space

Who is it for?

All permanent civil servants who have completed at least two months’ service.

What do I get?

This service is to cover the cost of making improvements to your home office to ensure a productive and safe working space. This advance sits alongside the provisions of the flexible working policy, procedure and the existing provision of IT, chairs and desks.

This advance is designed to support employees to cover the cost of improvements that have a direct link towards the work the employee carries out for MOD from their home. You are entitled to make a request for an advance of up to £5,000 which must be repaid within 24 months of the advance being paid.

Next Steps

  • 1

Please read the scheme guidance and the application form (see HR Form 1965A: Request for Work Space Advance of Salary) carefully

  • 2

You should make your application to DBS Civilian Personnel through HR Form 1965A electronically and advise your line manager accordingly of your application for the advance. This form also authorises the necessary deductions which will be made from your pay.

  • 3

The advance will be paid with salary at the end of the month in which the claim was received, provided it has been received by that month’s cut-off date. The advance will then automatically be deducted from your salary in equal monthly payments.

It should be noted that if the total value of your salary advances issued in a financial year exceeds £10,000 it is considered by HMRC to be a payment in kind and is covered by P11D arrangements and you will be liable to pay additional tax.
