Am I eligible?

Get You Home (Overseas) is available to most Service personnel who are permanently assigned to an overseas station, as well as any accompanying spouse, civil partner or dependent children.

  • an overseas station is a military location overseas.

  • What’s it for?

    This allowance is designed to reduce the amount of time Service personnel are separated from their family, friends and way of life when serving overseas.

    What do I get?

    You are entitled to one return journey for each 12-month period you’re assigned overseas.

    For each eligible member of your immediate family, you can claim back the full cost of an economy-class return airfare up to the MOD flight allowance for the country where you’re assigned. The rates were revised on 1 Feb 24 and can be found here

    You can also claim for the cost of travel to and from the airport, both in the UK and the country where you’re assigned within limits set out in JSP 752.

    When can’t I use this?

    You won’t be eligible for this allowance if you:

    • are serving on an assignment to Germany, France, Belgium or the Netherlands for less than 183 days, or serving on an assignment elsewhere in the world where you do not have an expectation of serving in post for at least 12 months.

    • have a separate entitlement to a return journey to the UK for themselves and their families as part of their terms and conditions (e.g. Loan Service personnel) or under a package of bespoke allowances (e.g. attachés and advisers) are not eligible for this allowance.

    • are permanently assigned to an overseas location but are remote working from the UK or your country of domicile.

    • receive Families Assistance for Visits Abroad

     In addition, if you are in receipt of School Children’s Visits allowance to an overseas are for a child, you will not be able to claim a Get You Home Overseas journey for that child.

    How do I claim?

    You should apply for authority to travel on JPA. The Apply for authority in order to make a self-service journey claim user guide (which can be found at JPA user guides) tells you how to do this. This will generate an authorised journey number

    You are then responsible for making your own travel arrangements.

    Claims for refunds of travel costs should then be  submitted via  JPA iexpenses. More information can be found in the Get You Home (overseas) self-service user guide and, if you want to apply for an advance to cover the costs, in the Claim for Advance of Subsistence/Get You Home (Overseas) Travel self service user guide, both of which can be found at JPA user guides

    If you don’t have access to JPA, then you need complete JPA Form F016 (which can be found at JPA forms) and submit it to your unit HR admin office, together with an authorised journey number
