What’s it for?
Functional Skills include the English and maths skills that equip you to deal with your job role.
All Army personnel need to gain Level 1 Functional Skills qualifications in English and maths within three years of joining the Services. They then need to progress to Level 2 in order to promote to Sergeant. Further information, including an explanation of the academic levels, can be found in ACSO 3225
What do I get?
You’ll have the opportunity to complete Level 1 and 2 qualifications in English and maths, plus Level 1 and 2 qualifications in Speaking and Listening if you need them.
How do I claim?
If you don’t already have Level 1 and 2 Functional Skills qualifications in English and maths when you join you will be assessed to work out a learning plan and to find out whether you also need a Functional Skills qualifications in Speaking and Listening. The achievement of English and maths qualifications are embedded into the completion of apprenticeships that you are enrolled onto during Initial Trade Training.
