Service Families Travel

If your immediate family have to travel to support your Service duties, you could get help with their travel costs

  • travel

What’s it for?

Most Service personnel move around a lot as part of their military career. The Service Families Travel allowance covers your immediate family’s travel costs so they can go with you when you’re assigned to a new duty station in the UK or overseas.

If you’re stationed overseas and your accompanying child needs to go to the UK to attend an interview at a university or similar type of academy (such as the Service college at Sandhurst), you can use the allowance to get a return flight to the UK for your child.

The allowance can also be used to cover travel costs when compassionate leave has been authorised, such as returning to the UK to visit a close relative who is seriously ill.

When can't I use this?

You can’t claim Service Families Travel when your family are joining you at your place of duty to set up home for the first time.

What do I get and how do I claim this?

Your Unit HR admin Unit HR/Personnel Office will normally arrange the travel for your family
