Transfer Options
Gain the unique experience and skills that a Royal Navy career delivers
Am I eligible?
All Royal Navy personnel, both Regular and Reserve are eligible to apply, although, outside of specific instances, there is no automatic right to transfer.
What’s it for?
The Royal Navy gives you the opportunity to shape your career. We recognise that individual aspirations and skills may shift as you develop, and thus there is a mechanism to apply to transfer to a new branch or specialisation that you feel you may be better suited to.
What do I get?
Subject to Service need, there are several different opportunities to change what you do in the Royal Navy:
transfer to another branch or specialisation, including to the submarine fleet.
transfer from the Regulars to the Reserves
transfer from the Reserves to the Regulars
transfer to another Service in the Armed Forces.
The requirements concerning eligibility for these different career moves are detailed and you can find further information in the references below or ask your Divisional Officer, Career Manager or Branch Manager for advice.
If you're in the Marines, in addition to the links below, you can also read 'A Corps of Specialists – A Careers Guide to the Royal Marines Specialisations' for more information (available in hard copy only).
How do I claim?
If you are considering a Branch Transfer then you should consult BR 3 Chapter 51 and discuss with your Divisional Officer or Career Manager.
