Functional Skills in Literacy and Numeracy

What’s it for?

Functional Skills are the basic abilities in English and maths that equip you to deal with the problems and challenges of everyday life.

All Royal Navy personnel need to gain Level 1 Functional Skills qualifications in English and maths within three years of joining the Navy. They then need to progress to Level 2 within eight years of joining.

What do I get?

You’ll get Level 1 and 2 qualifications in English and maths. Royal Navy personnel also complete Information and Communications Technology Functional Skills level 1

How do I claim?

If you don’t already have Level 1 and 2 Functional Skills qualifications in English and maths when you join, you’ll have an assessment to work out an individual learning plan.
