Defence Main Effort Civilian (DMEC)

Use your skills where Defence needs them the most.

Who is it for?

MOD civilians from AO/E1 to G6/B1, from any profession. If you want to support Defence’s top priorities, whether crisis or surge, you can join the volunteer pool (subject to line manager approval).

What do I get?

  • Meaningful impact: contribute to Defence’s priority work when it matters most.

  • Career development: build new skills, broaden experience and grow your network across Defence.

  • Real‑world exposure: short‑term roles, typically 3–6 months (up to 12 maximum), matched to urgent needs; some crisis roles may deploy quickly.

    DMEC Line Manager


    Talk to your line manager about joining the pool (line manger approval is required via MyHR ‘Crisis & Surge Volunteering / DMEC’ ).

    DMEC Readiness


    Decide your readiness: opt into the Crisis Pool (able to start within ~48 hours) and/or the Surge Pool (start within 5- 10 days).

    Apply via MyHR: select ‘Crisis & Surge Volunteering / DMEC’ to submit your volunteer details. Please see DMEC's internal communications site for more information.
