Flexible Working

MOD offers a range of flexibilities to enable a better work-life balance whilst ensuring it can meet business needs and attract and retain a diverse range of talent.

Who is it for?

All MOD civil servants.

What do I get?

Discuss your Flexible Working request with your Line Manager to see what flexibilities may work to suit you and the business. There are various arrangements that could be appropriate, including the following:

Work Schedule Types and Working Hours

  • Full-time standard

  • Part-time

  • Full-time compressed hours

  • Part-time/job share

  • Alternate weeks

  • Partial retirement

  • Part-year, including term-time

  • Annualised hours

  • Irregular hours

  • Shift/roster work

Working Times

  • Staggered hours

  • Flexible Working Hours, FWH, ‘Flexi’ or ‘Flexitime’

Smarter Working/Work Location

  • Remote Working (another MOD site or other location)

  • International Remote Working Temporary Concession

  • Hybrid

  • Permanent Contractual Homeworking

Your Flexible Working requests may be due to caring responsibilities, disability and/or medical need, and it would help your manager to understand these elements of your life and how they affect you.
